Challenges

Many iterations have been developed requiring additional tooling for the injection moulding to finesse the product.

The engineering of the design and the components had to be simplified to achieve a faster assembly process and a better aesthetic.

Initially, as a very different approach for the bedding industry, it was difficult to get the attention of the industry to entertain this design as a viable opportunity.

There have been questions around the use of plastic but the plastic being utilised had already been produced and was already existing in our environment, so this product provides the vehicle to keep this highly recyclable polymer in circulation for multiple lifecycles.

Approach

The ABSC has taken a proactive approach over the years of this project to support Robovoid as our Industry Partner.

It has been one of collaboration across our stakeholder base sharing ideas from those involved, and excellent listening and iterations by Robovoid to improve the strength, the assembly process and the aesthetics of the product.

Trialling in different situations and rollator testing kindly facilitated by AH Beard has proven the strength and lifespan of the product.

The bed bases continue to be trialled to provide insitu proof and confidence by the following organisations:

  • Student accommodation
  • Social Housing
  • An Indigenous remote community

ABSC Support

The ABSC chose to support this project with significant time in kind support and a cash contribution of $50,000 to demonstrate that a different approach to product design can be imagined and developed to achieve a fully circular product.
